Teen Activist Project (TAP)

This is a paid internship for teens at the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU).

TAP works on a wide range of social justice issues and is ideal for students interested in health care, law, social justice, and community organizing.

Students who are interested in the program can complete the application at: www.nyclu.org/tap .

A little more about the program:

TAP meets weekly, every Monday from 4:15-6:15pm in lower Manhattan, and brings together teens from all over the NYC area to learn about and discuss civil liberties issues, such as students’ rights, confidential health care rights for minors, racial justice, immigrants’ rights, LGBTQ rights, freedom of speech – and more! TAP members work together to plan and execute a project on a social justice issue of their choice, getting

hands-on training in peer education, community organizing, and meeting and working with professionals on civil liberties issues.

Last year TAP’s final project was a photo essay about activism in NYC. The project can be found at www.nyclu.org/tap .

TAP members receive $9.00 per hour or community service hours. The program

offers students opportunities to lobby state legislators in Albany, teach their peers important information about their rights, sharpen their public speaking skills, and much more.

To qualify to participate, applicants must be 14 to 21 years old and in a New York City high school or a GED program. Our meetings are held at the NYCLU’s offices at 125 Broad Street in Manhattan and take place on Mondays from 4:15 to 6:15 PM. We also ask that peer educators be available to meet after school at least one other day of the week. Youth who join are expected to remain in the program for the length of the school year.

Applications will be vetted as they arrive (sending in an application early is encouraged!) and are due in our office by Friday, September 26th. Late applications may be disqualified. Interviews will take place the week of October 6th or 13th.

From the office of Tom DiNapoli's reelection campaign to NYS Comptroller:

The office is seeking students to volunteer at their public events, perform canvassing operations and intern in the office. Community service hours will be offered to students.

Students who are interested and would like more information, you can reach Mrs. Park, our high school guidance counselor in room 429A, or email her at: jpark@ewsis.org.
