Japanese 2 (8th Grade)

Welcome to the second year of Japanese!

Description:

Japanese 2 is a course for students who have completed one year of Japanese language study. In this course, students will:

     -solidify hiragana and katakana skills learned in the previous year

     -learn to read and write between 75-100 kanji characters

     -continue to develop oral communication skills

     -be able to listen to announcements and messages and pick up information

     -be able to write short letters, compositions, and haiku

     -conduct focused research in English on topics related to Japan

     -develop presentation skills for sharing the results of their research to the class

     -gain greater understanding into how similarities and differences (between Japan and other cultures, as well as between different cultures in general) affect our lives

     -be able to communicate basic information, needs, and emotions in Japanese

If you would like to purchase a Japanese-English dictionary, please ask me to recommend one. Not all dictionaries are equally useful. I will post recommendations for different price ranges soon

Supplies

The following are supplies that you should have for the first week of class:

1)     THREE (3) STRONG folders with at least 2 pockets each. The folders should be different colors or patterns, if possible. The folders should not be easy to bend or rip. These folders are for Japanese class only, so do not plan to use for them for work from other classes. If you are not sure if a particular folder is okay, please ask me.

2)     At least 3 ballpoint pens, blue or black (these can be the same ones you use for other classes).

3)     A pair of scissors (these can be the same ones you use for other classes). Keep these at home; I will tell you when to bring them in.

4)     A box of colored, washable markers (these can be the same ones you use for other classes). Keep these at home; I will tell you when to bring them in.

5)     2 or 3 packs of small, blank FLASH CARDS. I will show you which ones to buy if you are not sure. You may also cut index cards in half.

6)     Small case or very small box for you to keep your flashcards.

7)     A box of tissues. 

IMPORTANT: You do NOT need to buy a separate notebook or binder for Japanese class. Please create a section for Japanese in a binder or notebook that you already have or that you use for another class. I will be checking at the end of the first week of class to make sure you have created and labelled a section for Japanese. If you your other subject teachers prefer that you not share a binder or notebook with another subject, then please buy a binder or notebook for Japanese.

*If you wish to use a binder or notebook exclusively for Japanese, then I recommend a 1" or 2" ring binder.
