DescriptionWelcome to Korean 2 - 8th grade! Students will meet 3 times a week. Here's the coursework. KOREAN 2 - Coursework Rhi, Jounghye (이 정혜) East–West School of International Studies E-mail: jrhi@ewsis.org School Year 2008 - 2009 TEXTBOOKS: 1. Writing Korean for Beginners by HOLLYM (초급 한국어 쓰기) 2. Korean Language I – Easy to Learn – Korean Culture Research Inc. (한국어 I) 3. Speaking Korean for beginners by HOLLYM (초급 한국어 말하기) OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, students will (1) be able to produce and comprehend coordinate, complex and compound Korean sentence structures in various tenses and moods (including relative clause constructions), (2) be able to read, write and speak complex/compound affirmative, negative, declarative, imperative, and interrogative sentences in polite style, (3) be able to produce and comprehend conditional, concessive, and various negative clauses, (4) be able to express comparison, reasons, ability, and desires/wishes, (5) be able to ask for and grant permission/favor, (6) be familiarized with ㅡ, ㄹ, ㅂ irregular verbs, and (7) be acquainted with sociolinguistic aspects of the language. GRADING

1. A quiz (including dictation) will be given once every week. No make-up quizzes or exams will be given except for emergencies (See #7). *In case of emergencies: (A written proof should be submitted.) (A missed quiz should be made up within a few days.) (No more than two make-up quizzes will be allowed a term.) 2. Punctual submission of homework is mandatory (Penalty for late submission!). 3. Final exam date will be announced. Absolutely no make-up final exam! 4. Class attendance is to be taken seriously. Except for emergencies with reasonable proofs, you will lose 0.5 point for each absence. 5. As part of your composition assignments, you must keep a journal (일기쓰기) (10 sets in total). The future tense (으)ㄹ 거예요 o the question word, how (어떻게) The above syllabus was made in accordance with Language other than English Checkpoint A Resource Guide of New York State Education Department. Checkpoint A study of languages other than English is the beginning of the curriculum and is a graduation requirement for all students in New York State. Assessment is based on the communicative approach in which the structure of the language is ancillary to, and yet supportive of the primary goal of meaningful communication. Checkpoint A: - emphasizes simple, selected sentence structures, not necessarily limited to the present tense; - Sets the stage for oral and written communication for the beginning language learner; - Forster cultural understandings; - Includes age-appropriate communicative activities, strategies, and goals that address the particular needs and interests of middle school students; - Encourages interdisciplinary connection; and - Is the first step on the pathway to linguistic proficiency.
