In The Kitchen With Mama Arroyo

Posted On Monday, June 2, 2008

Students at East-West spent their Saturday cooking in the kitchen with Ms. Arroyo.  The fabulous dish was loved by all.  Here’s the recipe for you to try at home.  Enjoy!

Boneless Chicken Cacciatore

By Mama Arroyo

Ingredients:

4 Boneless Chicken Breasts cut in ½

Adobo

Ground Basil

Ground Oregano

5-6 Cloves of Fresh Garlic, Chopped

1 Large Onion, Chopped

2 Cans Crushed Tomatoes

Grated Romano Cheese

Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)

Ziti or Rigatoni Pasta with Lines (sauce adheres better)

Directions:

1) In large, deep saucepan coat bottom with EVOO.

2) Add in chopped onion and chopped garlic and sauté for a few minutes.  In the meanwhile, slice the chicken breasts in ½ and season with adobo

3) Add chicken to garlic and onion and cook a few minutes before turning – you don’t want “pink” chicken. When chicken is almost done, remove and put to the side.

4) Add Crushed Tomatoes to the garlic and onions and season with Basil and Oregano to taste and lower the gas.

5) Take the chicken and cut it up into bite-sized cubed and put back into the saucepan with tomato mixture, cover and keep the gas low.

6) Fill a large pot with water and add salt. When water boils add pasta and one teaspoon of EVOO.

7) When pasta is done strain it in colander and place in bowl.

8) Add chicken in tomato sauce on top and add grated cheese to taste!

An East-West Poet

Posted On Wednesday, May 28, 2008

In remembrance of the Holocaust, Keyur Thakkur, a student in Ms. Braverman's 8th grade class wrote a beautiful and poignant poem.

My Heart Has Been Raped

by Keyur Thakkur

I was just sitting when they came.

They took my family away.

My mom couldn't walk

So she couldn't work.

When they shot her

My heart had been raped.

They took me on the train

With millions of people.

They trampled my brother

He lay dead on the floor

My heart had been raped.

We got to the camp

They made me go alone

Without my dad.

They took my sister

She was too little.

I am 15 years old

And my heart had been raped.

At the end I was the only one left

I didn't eat

I got too weak

I couldn't work

They wanted to kill me

But I was already dead on the inside

Because my heart had been raped.

EWSIS Students Speak Live With Astronauts Via Video Conference

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) plans to finish building the International Space Station (ISS) by the year 2010. The United States, Russia, Japan, Canada, and several European countries are working together in this endeavor.  In a recent mission, STS-123 delivered both the first component of the Japanese Experiment Module Kibo and the new Canadian Dextre robotics system to the ISS. NASA astronaut Garrett Reisman arrived aboard the ISS with STS-123 and is continuing his mission with Expedition 17.

Last month students at the East-West School of International Studies were given the opportunity to receive and invitation to speak with Garrett Reisman while he is aboard the ISS.  East-West held an essay contest asking students to research information about the STS-123 mission and to explain why they wanted to participate in the video conference event.

Congratulations to the following winners of the essay contest.

Danilo Bonilla
Samantha Yang
Rebecca Liang
Alia Tejeda
Gabriella Chu
Kanupriya Pandey

On Monday, May 12th, these students will be joining Ms. Lebowitz at the One Stop Richmond Hill Community Center to speak live with Garrett Reisman through video conference. The students will also be joining the local elected officials for a luncheon to commemorate this special event.
