  • East-West sent a teacher and three students to China this year. From China 2011

As a member of the Confucius Classroom Network, East-West was able to send three students and a teacher to China for ten days to travel and learn more about Chinese culture and history. Here is an excerpt from their experience, courtesy of Mr. Bantz, the supervising teacher:

"Our first full day in China has come to an end. Everyone is doing well and things have been smooth. It's hard to believe that we only arrived yesterday as we have already done so much.

After breakfast at the hotel, we took our charter bus to Beijing's Hutong district. The Hutong district is reminiscent of typical old Beijing: residences are centered around courtyards, which are connected to each other by narrow alleyways which are only navigable by bicycle or on foot, creating maze-like neighborhoods (do a quick Google search for Hutong to find out more).

We paired off and took bicycle rickshaws through the narrow streets of the Hutong area, where buses cannot travel. We were guided around a typical courtyard area, but the students were more interested in peering down the many narrow alleyways that we were not shown as we passed by in the bicycle rickshaw. We also visited the Beijing Confucius Temple, where the students appeared impressed by the traditional architecture of the temple complex buildings and the layout of the space between the buildings.

After a lunch of typical Chinese dishes shared by passing around a Lazy Susan, we visited the headquarters of Hanban, the sponsor of our trip. At Hanban, we explored interactive exhibits about Chinese culture; students generated paper-cut animals based on their birth year, tried on Peking Opera costumes, and rang old Chinese bells, among other activities."

"East-West is doing a great job preparing my children for high school. My daughter Priya is on the honor roll. She has grown as a public speaker because there are more opportunities for her to get involved. She was able to join the Student Government cabinet and act in the school play."

  • Congratulations to our Class 2011 seniors!

Our fifth school year is coming to a close as students finish their final exams and prepare for the summer. For our second class of graduating seniors, it is the end of their educational careers at East-West and the beginning of their futures.

Graduation will be held again at the Queens High School for Teaching and Evans J.R. Revere, an esteemed American diplomat with expertise in Asia, will serve as our keynote speaker. The ceremony will be held in honor of Odarri Lewis, a beloved East-West senior who passed away this year.

On June 1st, we welcomed new parents and students for both middle and high school into our school community. During the orientation, they met East-West administrators and teachers and were given tours by student volunteers. 245 students placed East-West as their top choice for 90 open seats in 6th grade this year.

Next year, we will see our first graduation of students who entered as 7th graders back in 2006. The following year, the first group of students who entered as 6th graders in 2007 will graduate. As we usher in new families and wish the best to our graduating seniors, the East-West community continues to grow beyond its walls, as does its potential to create a positive legacy in an increasingly globalized society.
