  • IMG_2722 Our High School Expanding ENL students had the opportunity to attend the Broadway show, Allegiance, on January 20th.  The show, based on George Takei's life during his internment during WWII, reinforces what the students have been learning as they read Farewell to Manzanar.

"I enjoyed the Broadway show so much!  It made me become more interested in musicals.  In Allegiance, Japanese-Americans didn't have the human rights that they should have.  They couldn't go anywhere.  They had to stay in the camp even though they were American citizens and that is not equality for them.  From Allegiance, the Broadway show, I felt the magic of music.  I found that not only the written word can express emotion, but also music can do that. It is like how some people feel about Muslims.  Muslims are different to them, so they want to keep them out of the country, just because they are different, but really, they just have a different religion."  -Jialu Shou   "I made the connection that freedom and equality of people were not the same.  Japanese-Americans went into internment camps and had no freedom and were not equal to other American citizens.  That was my first time watching a broadway show, but it is not the first time I saw a musical.  They sing with the emotion of the character. It is like ISIS and people who have the same religion as they do, the Muslims.  They are being treated differently, as the Japanese-Americans in the internment camps were, because they are different."  -Chaochao Lin

Around this time in Korea, every household prepares for winter.  One of the major preparations for winter is having Kimjang or kimchi-making event.

Kimchi is made with napa cabbage. Kimchi is made with thoroughly washed napa cabbage.

  • SAT AP Calculus

A total of 57 juniors and seniors in AP Calculus joined Ms. Markinson and a representative from the National Math and Science Initiative for an intensive six hours of Advanced Placement Calculus studying on Saturday, December 12, 2015. Students spent the day rotating through sessions based on different topics, working together to solve calculus problems, and playing math games that involved matching pairs of graphs.  It was an incredible turnout and NMSI was so impressed with them.  Everyone had a great time.

  • IMG_2800 From Our College Advisor, Ms. Washington...

Earlier this month, East-West seniors had the opportunity to participate in an On-Site Interview Day with Monroe College. Our students submitted their completed Admission Packets (which included an essay, letters of recommendation and Fall 2016 Freshman Application) and sat down with an admissions counselor to interview for a potential spot in the freshman class. On Tuesday, November 24th the Director of Admissions for Monroe College, Michael Niedzwiecki and Admissions Counselor, Jessica Castillo-Perez came to East-West to announce the students that were granted admission during a Muster presentation. We were excited to have some of our students accepted to Monroe and especially proud of the students that were able to obtain scholarship. The college office is happy to have the chance to present this opportunity to our students.
